Ride to ASARCO mine

Join Tom Lucas as he leads us to another really cool destination: the ASARCO mine in Green Valley south of Tucson, where we'll do a tour.

The mine tour starts at the Discovery Center where there’s mining equipment displays, information and a short video.  Next we board a bus for a narrated tour which takes us into the working open pit mine to see the large dumps trucks followed by stops at some of the copper processing facilities.  The tours starts at 11:15am, is about 65 minutes long, there’s some walking and the mine requires closed toed shoes.  Admission is $17.50 adults and $14.00 for seniors. Afterwards we'll stop by the Congress Hotel in Tucson for a 3160 challenge photo, with lunch nearby. Expect to return home between 5 and 6pm.

There are two departure spots, both with 7:45am KSU (arrive early for route and safety briefing):

  • HDOS
  • West side: QuikTrip 1540 N Bullard Ave in Goodyear

The two groups will join up at the rest area near mile stick 181 on I-10 south of Phoenix.
